It never feels like work. I absolutely love what I do. It's been a privilege.

OUR STORY

It started with a purse.

Sherry Nicholson wasn't looking to start a nonprofit. Having dinner with her husband in Nashville, she noticed an elderly woman sitting alone outside — invisible to everyone who walked past. Sherry couldn't. She'd experienced homelessness herself, and she knew that woman wasn't invisible because she didn't matter. She was invisible because no one had stopped long enough to notice she did.

So Sherry went home and emptied her own closet — filling purses with the small things that make a hard day survivable, and handing them out one conversation at a time. No strategic plan. Just a decision to stop walking past people.

She called it YAIPAK — You Are Important: People Administering Kindness. That sentence is still the whole mission. Every warehouse, every semi-truck, every disaster deployment since has existed to say the same thing to more people, in more places.

The moment that proved it. On December 9, 2023, an EF-3 tornado tore through Clarksville. YAIPAK's warehouse opened that same day — supplies moving, volunteers mobilizing, alongside FEMA, the Red Cross, and Fort Campbell. The organization stayed through the recovery for a year and beyond, a commitment noticed as far as a private invitation from First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. It was the moment that showed exactly what YAIPAK could do when it mattered most.

A mission that keeps finding more hands. What began with one woman and a stack of purses now spans the southeast and mid-west states plus international support — reaching over one million lives in 2025 alone. The four pillars — Be the Hope, Foster Hope, Patriot Hope, Rebuild Hope — aren't new values. They're names for what Sherry was already doing instinctively: showing up for people on the street, children in crisis, veterans finding their footing, and communities after disaster.

Where this goes next. YAIPAK isn't finished growing — more warehouses, more states, more people to serve.  But growth was never the point; it's the evidence. Leaders will change. Warehouses will multiply. And however large this gets, it will still come back to the same starting point: a person, a need, and the decision to stop and notice someone the world walked past.

The name will never need updating. It only needs living out.

You are important. You always were. No matter how big this gets, that's the one thing that will never change.
